Carroll “Junebug” Broyles of Remington caught this northern snakehead just before dusk Monday in the Rappahannock River.
“It surprised me; that’s the first one I’d seen,” said Mr. Broyles, who caught the 31-inch fish near Woodward Turf Farms, about two miles downstream from Remington.
Angling for bass “or anything that bites,” he used an artificial silver minnow to catch the monster, which weighed an estimated 15 pounds. A friend fileted the big fish.
Mr. Broyles had read about snakeheads at Lake Brittle
and elsewhere but had no idea the invasive species lurked this far upstream in the Rappahannock.
His fishing buddy Bobby Hitt took the photo.
