GENERAL DEFINITION OF WORK:
Performs intermediate unskilled and semiskilled work in the repair, maintenance and care of parks and related structures and equipment; does related work as required. This position is designated an “Essential Personnel”, requiring that employees respond and report to normal and after hours emergencies including inclement weather events, building emergencies, etc. Work is performed under general supervision.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/TYPICAL TASKS:
Maintaining and repairing park facilities and grounds; performing grounds keeping and custodial duties.
Performs general repair and maintenance work on County park facilities, buildings, equipment and grounds; performs manual work involving building maintenance/repair, grounds maintenance and custodial projects.
Performs various tasks associated with maintenance of athletic fields, buildings, or related facilities, which may include dragging and lining fields, performing minor carpentry, repairing building structures, assembling/installing equipment, moving or setting up equipment, inspecting safety of park/school equipment, repairing small engines, etc; maintains marinas and pools.
Performs various grounds maintenance tasks, such as repairing turf, mowing/edging grass and landscaped areas, cutting brush/tree limbs, picking up and disposing of tree limbs, trimming/pruning shrubs/hedges, planting flowers, applying/spreading mulch and other ground materials, spreading seed, raking/blowing leaves, picking up debris, etc.
Performs various custodial tasks, which may include vacuuming floors, sweeping/mopping floors, shampooing/extracting carpets, waxing/polishing floor surfaces, dusting/polishing furniture, cleaning restroom facilities, replenishing soap/paper supplies in restrooms, or refilling vending machines.
Assists in preparing park facilities for various events, rentals, or other activities.
Operates a variety of equipment, machinery and tools used in department projects and activities, which may include a service vehicle, tractor, lawn tractor, trimmer, leaf blower, chain saw, vacuum cleaner, buffer, carpet extractor, pick ax, shovel, rake, pitchfork, broom, mop, ladder, measuring devices, cutting tools, carpentry tools, mechanic tools, or hand tools.
Assists with snow removal and ice control.
Plans, organizes and mentors temporary park laborers.
Participates on assigned teams.
Achieves annual training goals.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
General knowledge of the tools, materials and equipment used in grounds maintenance work; general knowledge of the materials, equipment, tools and techniques of the standard building trades; general knowledge of safety precautions applicable to the duties of the class; ability to understand and follow instructions; ability to operate mowers, tractors and related machinery and equipment; ability to perform manual labor for extended periods of time; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Any combination of education equivalent to graduation from high school and minimum two years experience in Grounds Maintenance, Equipment Repair or Custodial Work.
This is medium work requiring the exertion of 50 pounds of force occasionally, up to 20 pounds of force frequently and some heavy work requiring the exertion of 100 pounds of force occasionally, up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects; work requires balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, and repetitive motions; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; visual acuity is required for depth perception, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, use of measuring devices, assembly or fabrication of parts at or within arms length, operation of machines, operation of motor vehicles or equipment, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work, and observing general surroundings and activities; the worker is subject to inside and outside environmental conditions, extreme cold, extreme heat, vibration, hazards, atmospheric conditions, and oils.
Possession of an appropriate driver’s license valid in the Commonwealth of Virginia. Possession of First Aid, CPR and AED certifications. OSHA 10 hour General Industry Certification. Current possession of Registered Technician Pesticide certification or be ability to obtain within six months of employment.
