Faces of Fauquier: FISH volunteer likes to help

Carol White has volunteered 13 years with Fauquier For Immediate Sympathetic Help (FISH).
I love to give back because we didn’t really have much either when I was growing up. It gets me over myself, when you see people who have much less. To me, this is fun and it’s productive.

Generosity flows from Carol White. She has volunteered for 13 years at Fauquier FISH (For Immediate Sympathetic Help), a non-profit organization that provides basic necessities such as groceries and school supplies to residents in need.

Every month she shops for groceries for the food bank in Warrenton, distributes nutritional items to patrons, and answers the phone.

“I love giving back to others, it keeps me grounded,” she says.

• Age

67

• Home

Warrenton

• Work

Volunteer food bank manager at Fauquier FISH (For Immediate Sympathetic Help). Previously volunteered at Fauquier Hospital in the gift shop.

• Why you do the job?

I love to give back because we didn’t really have much either when I was growing up. It gets me over myself, when you see people who have much less. To me, this is fun and it’s productive.

• Family

Four grown children: John Griffith, Christine Meadows, Amada Davis and Thomas Shifflett; two grandsons and another grandchild on the way.

• Education

Graduate of Lee High School in Springfield, 1964. Attended Northern Virginia Community College and Lord Fairfax Community College for a few years.

• Civic and/or Church involvement

Member of Warrenton Baptist Church.

• How long have you lived in Fauquier?

20 years.

• Why do you live here?

I moved here because it was too impersonal and crowded in Fairfax. It was more family-oriented in Fauquier and the schools weren’t crowded like Fairfax.

• How do you describe this county?

Family-oriented, friendly. It’s amazing, the constant generosity in this county.

• What would you change about Fauquier?

Nothing, they are doing just fine.

• What do you do for fun?

Spend time with my grandkids and family. I go to matinees and I love to go out to lunch.

• What’s your favorite place in Fauquier?

Claire’s at the Depot restaurant.

• What will Fauquier be like in 10 years?

More crowded. I think it will be more culturally diverse.

• Favorite TV show?

“American Idol.” I love music.

• Favorite Movie?

“Forrest Gump” and “The Butler.”

• Favorite book?

“The Great Gatsby,” by F. Scott Fitzgerald. It’s the one book that stuck in my head.

• Favorite vacation spot?

Virginia Beach

• Favorite flavor of ice cream?

Chocolate

• Who’s your hero and why?

My father, because he taught me principles that have stuck with me all these years. He taught me how to treat people: ‘Do unto others, as you would have them do to you.’ He was so generous and so funny.

• What would you do if you won $1 million in the lottery?

What I always say is, I would buy a food bank for Fauquier and houses for my kids or pay off their mortgages.
