Seven years ago, the firefighter from Warrenton couldn’t walk straight and had lower back pain whenever he tried to lift even the smallest thing.

Ronald Teribery went for a consultation at Warrenton’s Blue Ridge Orthopaedic and Spine Center. Dr. Jeffrey L. Wise, a spine specialist, eventually performed surgery.

After several years of treatments, rehabilitation and training, Teribery will represent the City of Fairfax Fire Department at this summer’s World Police and Fire Games. He will compete in the triathlon July 3.

Sunday morning, the 54-year-old ran in the fourth annual Bodies in Motion 5K and 10K race that started and finished at Warrenton Aquatic and Recreation Facility.

The race, hosted by Blue Ridge Orthopaedic Foundation – a philanthropic arm of the medical practice – had slightly fewer than last year’s record 400 runners.

Race organizer Leslie Wise, the surgeon’s wife and foundation leader, believes the slightly overcast and humid morning may have kept some race-day registrants away.

But the rain held off and the foundation raised more than $25,000 that will be doled out in July to various local non-profits in the area.

Thirty-eight corporate sponsorships aided in the raising of funds.

“We raised more money this year from corporate sponsorships, so we’ll have more to give out to our charities,” Mrs. Wise said.

Teribery used the 10-kilometer (6.2-mile) race as training for the World games. He finished 13th overall with a time of 47:23.89.

Some 300 runners and walkers finished the two races on a course that ran through neighborhoods in the northwestern part of town.

Another 50 or so youngsters competed in a one-mile fun run around the WARF soccer fields before to the main events.

Karsten Brown, 41, of Front Royal, repeated as the overall winner in the 10-k race with a time of 35:21.67.

Second place went to Tommy Verna, 32, with Ashley Palmer a 32-year old Lynchburg woman being top female and third overall runner with a time of 37:26.56.

Fourth overall went to Charles Bowles, a Clarke County resident and like Brown, a member of Winchester-based Shenandoah Valley Runners.

Florence Lamirand, 36, a former 5K winner took second among women 10K finishers Sunday. Third went to Ali Russell, 18, of Leesburg.

Twenty-six-year-old Rob Bell, of Springfield, took honors for being the top male in the 5K race while 49-year-old Alisa Harvey, of Manassas, took the top female award.

The top three finishers in both men and women 10-K won gift cards valued at $175, $150 and $75 and the top three in the 5K race got $150, $100 and $50.

Age-group winners received medals and those running in the 1-mile fun run earned ribbons.
