2 town police officers wounded on firing range

Officers Chris Campbell and Matt Eggers suffered wounds Wednesday morning on the firing range.
Two Warrenton police officers suffered wounds Wednesday morning on the firearms range at the Mount Weather Emergency Operations Center, a federal compound in Clarke and Loudoun counties.

“Officer Matt Eggers sustained a slight wound to the cheek. Officer Chris Campbell sustained a more serious but non-life-threatening injury to the rib cage,” the town police department said in a press release just before 4 p.m.

“Officer Campbell will remain at Inova Fairfax Hospital overnight,” the statement says. “It appears the incident was caused by a bullet that ricocheted off one of the metal target supports.

“The incident is being investigated by members of the Warrenton Police Department command staff.”

Officer Eggers received treatment on the scene. A medical helicopter flew Officer Campbell to Inova Fairfax.

Wednesday’s routine training included five town officers, Interim Police Chief Dan Boring said Wednesday afternoon.
