5 Friday Fauquier factoids: LHS junior Army program

Fauquier public high school students enrolled in
Army Junior ROTC
(Reserve Officer Training Corps) courses this year — up 6.7 percent from 2017-18.
Offered only at Liberty High School, the eight different elective classes fall under the career and technical education program.
Students learn leadership, citizenship, communication and life management skills along with map reading, technology and the role of the U.S. Army in the nation’s defense.
The combined amount of Business, Professional and Occupational License tax revenue Warrenton, Fauquier County, The Plains and Remington collected in fiscal 2017.
Each local government has different BPOL rates, which they apply to annual gross receipts to determine how much tax businesses must pay.
For fiscal 2017:
• Warrenton collected $1.9 million in BPOL taxes from 1,137 businesses.
• Fauquier received $1.4 million from 1,223 businesses.
• The Plains collected $34,628 from about 55 businesses.
• Remington collected $17,500 from 43 businesses.
The number of visits this summer to the county’s Larry Weeks Community Pool at Vint Hill.
Those visitors generated $67,128 in admission fees and $21,427 in concession stand revenue.
Named after a former, two-term Scott District representative on Fauquier’s board of supervisors, the pool opened 16 years ago.
The number of animals adopted at the Middleburg Humane Foundation in Marshall from Aug. 24 to Sept. 8 during its “Clear the Shelter” event.
During the event, an anonymous donor paid the adoption fees for:
• 16 cats
• 4 dogs
• 2 horses
• 2 goats
• 1 cow
Since the beginning of the calendar year, citizens have adopted 199 animals from the shelter.
Grant awarded to the Town of Warrenton from the Virginia Department of Historic Resources to survey properties with structures built in 1969 or before within the existing historic district.
Owners of buildings or historic properties with significance identified in the survey could be eligible for federal or state tax credit benefits.
The town will match the grant with $24,000 from fiscal 2019 unassigned funds.
The last historic district survey in Warrenton took place in 1998. A consultant will conduct the new survey.
