It costs $32,000 to house an inmate for a year in Fauquier’s jail on West Lee Street in Warrenton, according to the Virginia Compensation Board.

The Fauquier County Adult Detention Center had 1,452 inmates — an average 82 per day — during 2017, according to the sheriff’s office.
To determine the cost of housing an inmate for a year, the state agency uses a range of expense data related to food, medication, general supplies, vehicle and equipment use and the like, according to Capt. Mark Lavoie, who manages the jail.
Estimated number of hogs that American Heritage Family Farm near Warrenton produced, sold and had butchered in 2017.
Fauquier’s largest hog operation expects to more than double that number this year, owner Joe Saffer says.
The farm has 108 breeding hogs, including 100 sows and eight boars. When hogs reach maturity, they weigh an average 275 pounds.
American Heritage Family Farm last year also produced, sold and had butchered about 250 Angus and Hereford cows.

Amount of 2018 real estate taxes Fauquier landowners paid the last month of December in efforts to beat IRS changes in federal deductions.
Federal income tax reform will cap deductions for state and local levy payments at $10,000.
Owners made the advance payments on 233 real estate parcels in Fauquier, according to county Treasurer Tanya Wilcox.
“But the IRS has said that 2018 property taxes paid in 2017 must have been assessed in 2017 for the deduction to count,” Business Insider reported. “Simply prepaying an anticipated property tax bill will not be deductible on your 2017 tax return, according to the IRS.”
Fauquier always accepts advance tax payments, Mrs. Wilcox said.
But, as for deductibility from federal income taxes?
“That’s between you and the IRS,” the treasurer added.
