5 Friday Fauquier factoids: Liquor sales in the county

Clockwise from top left: The BB&T building, Boy Scout tree sales, Warrenton ABC store and potential roundabout at Lee Street and Walker Drive.
$8.3 million

The combined sales total for Fauquier’s three Virginia Alcoholic Beverage Control stores in fiscal 2018.

The previous year, the Bealeton, Warrenton and Marshall liquor stores together racked up about $8.1 million in sales, according to the state agency.

The ABC will decide whether to open a retail outlet in Old Town Warrenton at 104 Main St., a space that until September housed Latitudes, a “fair-trade” store, which moved a couple hundred feet west to shop on the same side of the street.

The ABC store in the Warrenton Village Shopping Center on West Lee Highway last year ranked first among Fauquier retail outlets and 22nd in the state, with about $5.3 million in sales. The Bealeton and Marshall stores had about $1.6 million and $1.4 million, respectively.

A Virginia Beach ABC store last year ranked first in the state, with $9.3 million in sales.

6

The number of traffic and pedestrian accidents since 2014 at three Warrenton intersections where town and state officials will consider constructing traffic circles.

The town police department reports:

• 1 accident at East Lee Street and Walker Drive in 2016.

• 1 accident each in 2014, 2015 and 2016 at East Lee and Falmouth streets.

• 1 accident this year in front of the old courthouse. Additionally, a vehicle hit a pedestrian there in 2016.

Square feet of usable office space available in the BB&T building on Warrenton’s Main Street.

Fauquier’s board of supervisors has agreed to commission an architectural study of the building to help to determine whether to buy the former bank. It would house several county departments, which would move from the courthouse at 40 Culpeper St.

BB&T has listed the building and 47-space parking lot for sale at $3.5 million. For tax purposes, the county values the 1.25-acre property at $4.1 million.

1,200

Christmas trees that Boy Scouts hope to sell from the parking lot next to Rankins True Value Hardware in Warrenton. The fundraiser, which started Nov. 23, the day after Thanksgiving, will continue through Christmas Eve.

Every year, Troops 10, 161, 175, 180 and 1171 sell Fraser, Douglas and Concolor firs and Scotch pines, ranging from 6 to more than 12 feet tall.

Trees range from $35 to $130.

148

The number of noise complaints that Fauquier sheriff’s deputies have investigated this year, as of Thursday.

Among the county’s five magisterial districts, Lee had the most with 56. Center had the fewest at 14, but the Warrenton constitutes most of that district. Town police handle complaints there.

The lane that originally was to be a turn lane into Wal-Mart outside of the round about is now a high speed bypass of the round about and for those in the round about trying to turn into Wal-Mart, it is at your own risk

I'm not blaming the roundabouts, as you say they idiots on their phone have proven their dangerous incompetence in many places along our roadways. I'm just saying the roundabouts may push them and us even further into a mess.

Neither of the drivers that just drove into the circle in front of me, without stopping and making me suddenly stop to avoid a collision, appeared to be on a phone. Had they been...

Don't blame the roundabout for idiots on their phones. Whether a roundabout, red light or stop sign, all are equally dangerous if drivers aren't paying attention.

6 accidents in 4 years at 3 different intersections is justification to spend taxpayer money on roundabouts? I have come closer to other drivers hitting me at the new one they built than any of these proposed intersections.

If they are going to waste money building them, they need to include some type of driver orientation on how they work. For example those already in the roundabout have the right of way, not those entering it. I have already nearly been hit while in it by morons paying no attention while entering.

I leave the discussion for another day on how dangerous these are with drivers more focused on their phone instead of driving.
