5 Friday Fauquier factoids: New teacher benefits costs

Cost of “fringe benefits” a first-year teacher with a bachelor’s degree receives from Fauquier County Public Schools.

With a base salary of $43,000, plus fringe benefits, a starting teacher’s annual compensation totals $63,887 this fiscal year.

“The cost of benefits does and can change,” county Human Resources Director Janelle Downes said.

The benefits and costs:

• $9,540 for health insurance.

• $6,742 for Virginia Retirement System.

• $3,290 for Federal Insurance Contributions Act (FICA).

• $563 for life insurance.

•  $516 for retirement health insurance credit.

• $120 for worker’s compensation.

• $116 for short-term/long-term disability insurance.

The number of drug-related arrests deputies made in Fauquier for 2018, according to Sheriff Bob Mosier.

That represents a 21-percent increase over 2016’s total of 290 drug-related arrests.

In 2017, deputies made 332 such arrests.

Warrenton’s reservoir stores 124 million gallons of water and the Airlie reservoir holds 260 million gallons.

Estimated first-year cost to the county if Fauquier’s board of supervisors agrees to help maintain the Elk Run Church Mini Museum at Midland.

Museum representatives have asked the board to assist the group with upkeep of the museum, which stands on the site of the Elk Run Anglican Church, one of the oldest in Southern Fauquier.

A one-time cost to upgrade the property’s parking area and related improvements would total about $37,000, according to the county parks and recreation department.

Annual, “on-going” expenses totaling about $16,000 would pay for lawn maintenance, trash pickup, portable toilet rental fees and the like.

The supervisors probably will decide during a March 19 work session whether to include the request in the county’s proposed 2020 budget, which takes effect July 1.

Open 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. every day, the medical center at 493 Blackwell Road markets itself as an alternative to the emergency room and other walk-in clinics.

The business operates as a subsidiary of Piedmont Family Practice, an independent medical services business that local physicians established in 1997.

The urgent care clinic will mark its anniversary Friday, March 15.
