All smiles, she had driven in from Orlean with a friend to be among the first to order some spicy chicken tenders at the new Popeyes Louisiana Chicken that opened Thursday, Nov. 1, on Broadview Avenue in Warrenton .

But, Molly Savage didn’t come for just the chicken.

“Honestly, their biscuits are the best!” Ms. Savage said.

Dozens of customers packed the place inside and out, their cars looping around the building from the drive-thru out to the street.

About two dozen employees frenetically did what seemed like a very smooth dance together.

Store Manager Oralia Roque said she continues to hire applicants to fill all the prep jobs in the back of the house and the server/cashier positions out the front. Those jobs pay $9 an hour and up, according to Ms. Roque.

The management team at the store to make sure Day One went well would not divulge the true secrets of cooking Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen chicken. But, they allowed that it has a lot to do with keeping the chicken and the batter cold right up until cooking. And most of all, the 12 hours marinating in Popeye’s mild or spicy seasoning does the trick, they said.

Like the relationship between the Coca-Cola Co. and its bottlers, Popeyes corporate supplies its outlets with all their chicken, spices and biscuits.

The new restaurant at 286 Broadview Ave. joins more than 30 others in Maryland and Virginia under the ownership of Janjer Enterprises.

Two longtime friends from Silver Spring, Md., Jan Stromph and Jerry Friedlander own the company. Nearly 40 years ago, they thought about opening a Popeyes and they called the company’s headquarters, then in New Orleans.

Popeyes founder Al Copeland sent up box of his Cajun-inspired chicken the next day, and the franchise company has gone full-tilt since, said Mike Byrne, Janjer’s director of construction and maintenance.

Today, Miami-based AFC Enterprises owns the Popeyes brand. The company also owns Burger King, which includes Jim Walther’s franchise not far from Popeye’s on Broadview.

Janjer has its own construction and maintenance staff as well as its IT experts and architects to make sure every Popeyes adheres to the corporate branding.

The Warrenton restaurant would have opened weeks ago, but Mr. Byrne said almost constant rain delayed completion. The franchisee usually builds a new Popeyes in about 120 days.

“This one took us six months,” Mr. Byren said.

He still has a long “punch list” to work through, including directives from the town to put glare shields on the outside lights and to increase the size of the landscape shrubs. “You have to get along with the town” he said.

Why come to Warrenton?

“Because it had no Popeyes,” Mr. Byren said.

The nearest Popeyes — not part of the Janjer group — stands in Bealeton.

A flood of Fauquier High School students visited the new Popeyes on opening day.

“Popeyes never disappoints,” said Isaiah Brothers, one of the students.

I love Popeye's Fried Chicken but here's what I really want to know ...

Are the onion rings made fresh like the store on Sudley Road in Manassas or are they frozen like most other Popeye's? The frozen rings are just everyday frozen stuff but the fresh-made rings are awesome!

I am so glad Popeyes is now open! The staff is very friendly and accommodating, I think they are just excited as the customers are. It's incredible to watch them in motion. The article described it well "a very smooth dance together"....smooth indeed, that tall fella and all moving about each other working together. I felt as if though my wife and I were their only customer. Well, we will be customers for as long as we can. Keep it up!

"their" chicken (correction).

Is there chicken organic, or does it comes from one of those 'farms" where they are injected with hormones, locked in little cages, and all kinds of nasty stuff?

So is it "Pop Eyes" or "Pope Yes"?

I've always wondered that.
