Best Bets: Read Across America, races in Delaplane

Library branches in Bealeton, Marshall and Warrenton will celebrate Dr. Seuss’s birthday with crafts and a visit from The Cat in the Hat.
Fundraisers and runs in Fauquier top the list of entertainment options for the first weekend in March.

Topping the list, all three Fauquier County Public Library branches will celebrate Dr. Seuss’s birthday with a special craft and story time Saturday.

Other options include a pancake breakfast, regional science fair and two runs at Sky Meadows State Park.

Pancake breakfast fundraiser
8 to 10 a.m. Saturday, March 3
105 West Lee Highway, Warrenton

The Liberty High School Band program will hold a pancake breakfast fundraiser at Applebee’s in Warrenton. Breakfast includes eggs, sausage/bacon and coffee tea or juice. Tickets available from LHS band students. $10 per person.

Spring Thaw 5K and 10K at Sky Meadows
9 to 11 a.m. Saturday, March 3
11012 Edmonds Lane, Delaplane

Sky Meadow State Park hosts a 5K or 10K trail race through pastures, meadows, woods and historic farmland. Part of the Virginia State Parks Adventure Series. Parking at Turner Pond. Register online. $30 for 5K. $35 for 10K. After March 2, price increases to $40 for 5K and $45 for 10K.

Tenderfoot Adventure Race at Sky Meadows
11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, March 3

Citizens in this all-terrain scavenger hunt will find as many checkpoints around Sky Meadows State Park as possible by trekking across meadows, woodlands and farmland. Parking at Turner Pond. $60 per person; $40 for family teams; $55 for adventure class teams with a longer course. Prices increase March 2. Register online.

Fauquier County Regional Science & Engineering Fair

High schoolers from Fauquier County public schools, Wakefield and Mountain Vista Governor’s School will present their projects at the fifth annual science and engineering fair. The event takes place at Fauquier High. Free.

Allegro Community School of the Arts fundraiser
6 to 9 p.m. Saturday, March 3
3623 Grove Lane, Delaplane

The non-profit organization, Allegro, hosts an evening at Barrel Oak Winery with dinner and music from The Bottle Shop, Angela Barnard Gibson and Ross D’Urso. Proceeds go toward student financial aid and scholarships for music and arts programs at Allegro. Adults, $25; youth ages 12 to 21, $20; children ages 11 and younger, $15.
