Best Bets: Twilight Polo, Warrenton Spring Festival

Warrenton’s Main Street will close Saturday for the popular spring festival with vendors, music and children’s activities.
Twilight Polo at Great Meadow begins this Saturday with Military Appreciation Night.
Outdoor activities dominate Fauquier’s weekend activities.

Twilight Polo at Great Meadow kicks off its 2017 season Saturday night in The Plains and Warrenton’s 39th annual spring festival takes over Main Street.

Other fun options include the Piedmont Regional Art Show and Sale, a block party at Vint Hill, “The Secret Garden” at the community theatre, a 5K near Marshall and a historic bridge presentation in Orlean.

The Mother’s Day-themed block party features Old Bust Head Brewery beer, food by Covert Café and A la Carte Catering, vendors, ice cream, music by Leon Rector and other activities. Free admission.

Piedmont Regional Art Show
6 to 8:30 p.m. Friday, May 19
10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, May 20
11:30 to 3 p.m. Sunday, May 21

Grace Episcopal Church in The Plains hosts its 70th annual art show and sale this weekend. Organizers expect 400 art submissions this year from all media, ages and levels of experience. The opening gala is complementary to exhibiting artists and sponsors, $15 for guests. Saturday and Sunday admission is free. Proceeds support the church.

“The Secret Garden” at Fauquier Community Theatre

The Fauquier Community Theatre presents the musical “The Secret Garden.” Orphaned in India, 11-year-old Mary Lennox returns to Yorkshire, England to live with her embittered, reclusive uncle Archibald and his invalid son Colin. Based on the beloved book. Adults, $18; children ages 3 to 18 and seniors 60+, $16. Tickets available online or by calling 540-349-8760.

Warrenton Spring Festival
9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, May 20
Main Street, Warrenton

The 39th annual spring festival takes over Warrenton’s Main Street with arts and crafts, food, music, performances, children’s activities, a petting zoo, vendors and other activities. Rain or shine. Free.

The History of Bridges in Virginia
2 p.m. Saturday, May 20
6838 Leeds Manor Road, Orlean

Nathan Holth, nationally known bridge history expert, will present “The History of Virginia Bridges” at the Orlean Volunteer Fire Station. The event will also include discussion about the Waterloo Bridge. Sponsored by Fauquier’s community development department and the Piedmont Environmental Council. Free.

Twilight Polo at Great Meadow
5:30 p.m. Saturday, May 20
5089 Old Tavern Road, The Plains

The season opening of Twilight Polo begins this Saturday night at Great Meadow with a Military Appreciation Night theme. Each Saturday night features three polo matches, wine tasting, tug o’ war for children and dancing in the pavilion. Gates open at 5:30. Twilight Polo runs May through September. $35 per vehicle in advance online. $40 at the gate.

Mountainside Montessori 5K
9 a.m. Sunday, May 21
4206 Belvoir Road, Marshall

Mountainside Montessori School hosts its annual fundraising 5K walk/run. The school serves children from toddlers to ninth grade. Children’s 100-yard dash begins at 10 a.m. 5K walk/run starts at 10:15. The event also includes bluegrass music, refreshments, balloons, face painting, games and a percussion petting zoo. Same-day registration and packet pick-up from 9 to 10 a.m. Day-of registration: children’s race, $10; adult run/walk, $35.
