Bridge collapses as UPS truck attempts to cross

Some eastern Fauquier customers probably will get UPS packages late Tuesday.

A United Parcel Service driver attempted to cross a private bridge that collapsed under the truck’s weight at 1:41 p.m., according to the sheriff’s office.

The accident took place on Longwood Lane off of Old Dumfries Road.

The single-lane bridge has a metal truss system and wood decking.

The Catlett Volunteer Fire and Rescue Co. responded to the accident, which produced no injury.

The Longwood Lane bridge was a private bridge and the owner doesn't have to post weight limits. The owner is responsible for whatever happens on that bridge since he/she maintains it. The truck could have come from Rt. 667 or Rt. 602. The property owner might be at fault and may possibly open to a lawsuit from UPS. Since the accident may have been on private property, the driver may not be charged with anything. UPS is a tough company for which to work and may hold the driver accountable for the damage to the truck and the late delivery of any items on board. Would like to know how this all pans out.

I bet he'll blame GPS. Anyone know if there's a weight limit sign there?
