Fauquier County Farm Tour set Saturday, Oct. 14

Fauquier Farm Tour
• What: 22nd annual showcase of local agriculture.

• When: 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 14.

• Where: Seven stops around the county on self-guided tours, along with wineries, orchards, corn mazes and farm markets.

Fauquier’s 22nd annual Fall Farm Tour & Field Day will take place 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 14

The award-winning event features seven stops with special tours, activities and behind-the-scenes demonstrations. Admission is free at most stops.

Additionally, Fauquier’s 25 wineries, four breweries, five orchards, four corn mazes and six farmers’ markets will welcome visitors who take the self-guided tour. The event will take place rain or shine. No pets or smoking allowed.

Cool Lawn Farm

11145 Cemetery Road, Bealeton

Owned by the Smith family, more than 600 dairy cows get milked on the farm each day. Cool Lawn Farm makes up more than 900 acres, preserved through Fauquier County’s Purchase of Development Rights program. The family also owns Moo Thru ice cream and dairy store at the intersection of Routes 28 and 29 near Remington.

Citizens will get to learn about the operations of a modern dairy farm through a guided hayride tour every hour, butter making and a cattle-roping demonstration at 2 p.m. Baby cows will also be available to pet. Barbecue and ice cream available for purchase at Moo Thru.

Greenfield Farms Alpacas

11353 Barnes Road, Catlett

Established in 2007, Greenfield Farms Alpacas is a family owned and operated farm on 20 acres.

Visitors will learn about alpacas and their fiber including how to breed and sell them as livestock. Fiber processing, spinning and felting demonstrations will take place throughout the day. Alpaca fleece, toys, apparel and yarn will be sold.

Grey Horse Vineyards

12285 Elk Run Church Road, Midland

A boutique winery and vineyard in Southern Fauquier, Grey Horse Vineyards specializes in small batch Virginia wines in the Bordeaux style. Situated on 35 acres with 10 acres of grapes, the vineyard features a picturesque tasting room on a hill.

Vineyard tours available every hour from 12 to 5 p.m.

McCormick House and workshop

4499 Old Auburn Road, Catlett

The site of plow inventor Stephen McCormick’s home was discovered in 2009.

Mr. McCormick invented and manufactured a cast iron plow that revolutionized agricultural practices in Virginia and the South. Patented in the early 19th century, the plow broke up soil more effectively and increased the amount and quality of plowing that could be done in one day.

Citizens can learn about Mr. McCormick, his plow and this important archaeological site. A simulated archeological study for children will take place from noon to 2 p.m.

Messick’s Farm Market

6025 Catlett Road, Bealeton

An extension of the O.B. Messick & Sons dairy farm, the market opened in 2014. Messick’s Farm Market offers a variety of fresh produce, meats, dairy, baked goods and flowers. Throughout the year, they offer pick-your-own experiences for blackberries, strawberries and pumpkins.

The family-friendly fall festival featuring hayrides, pumpkins, a petting zoo, face painting, pumpkin cannons and games costs $10 per person.

Powers Farm & Brewery

9269 Redemption Way, Midland

This sustainable farm features a hopyard and brewery with an onsite taproom. Fruits and vegetables sold through a summer CSA come mostly from organic and heirlooms seeds, grown without chemical fertilizers or pesticides.

Visitors can sample small batch beers with flavors from the field in flights, pints or growlers to go and learn about vegetable and hops production.

Willowlyn Farm

9781 Willowlyn Lane, Catlett

Four generations of the Eustace family have operated this land as a dairy farm in the 1920s to 2005. In the last several years, the farm has transitioned into a vegetable and field crop operation. Willowlyn Farms’ CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) program began in 2010.

Attendees will learn how a CSA works and what types of produce participants receive. Tours of the vegetable farm available at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m.

The Fauquier County Agricultural Development Department coordinates the annual farm tour, with help from the John Marshall Soil and Water Conservation District, the Fauquier County Farm Bureau, the Fauquier Chamber of Commerce, the Warrenton-Fauquier Visitor Center and Farm Credit.
