I-95 bridge work could snarl Fauquier traffic

One of the recommended alternatives includes Routes 15/29 and 17 through Fauquier.
Traffic through Fauquier County probably will get worse on two upcoming weekends.

The Virginia Department of Transportation plans major repairs to a bridge on southbound Interstate 95 in Prince William County.

With traffic restricted to two lanes, one of VDOT’s recommended alternative routes will send traffic out Interstate 66, then down Routes 15/29 and 17 through Fauquier County.

Work on the Neabsco Creek bridge will begin at 9 p.m. Saturday, April 29, and continue until 6 a.m. Monday, May 1. The project will resume at 10 p.m. Friday, May 5, and end at 6 a.m. Monday, May 8.

The second weekend of work will coincide with the Virginia Gold Cup steeplechase races, which attract about 50,000 people to Great Meadow near The Plains, clogging area highways.

“We’ve tried to pick the right time before summer starts and after the Easter break,” VDOT spokeswoman Ellen Kamilakis told InsideNova.

Ms. Kamilakis admitted “there’s no good time for significant delays on I-95,” a major route for commercial trucking and East Coast travelers.

WTOP first reported the planned traffic diversion.

As if the Out of towers using GPS don't back up at the light now at Opal making the left Turn and then having to turn around. I sure hope the Sheriff gets VDOT (our just has a crew do it for him for public safety)to open the barricade on 17 South these weekends at Opal and allow the GPS users to keep going that make the wrong left turn. If they don't we will have back ups and gridlock at the light and U-turn for sure.
