New report details three options for middle schools

Our previous recommendation of what is ‘best’ for FCPS still stands. We believe that a new consolidated middle school on the Taylor site makes the most sense . . . .

Fauquier’s school board Friday morning will take another shot at developing a plan that county supervisors will accept for addressing aging middle schools in Warrenton.

An architectural firm has proposed three options — two for renovating and expanding Warrenton Middle and one for a new school on the Taylor Middle campus along Shirley Avenue. Each option would result in a school for 800 students in Grades 6 to 8.

> Report at bottom of story

The county supervisors, who control spending, this spring rejected proposals for building a consolidated middle school to replace both buildings. The new school for 900 to 1,000 students would cost as much as $61 million, architects estimated.

All five supervisors balked at the price tag.

Supervisor Chris Granger (Center District), who represents the county seat, consistently has pushed for renovation and expansion of Warrenton Middle School, built on Waterloo Street in 1934.

The latest consultants’ report details options for doing so. But, developing a second entrance for vehicles and making the improvements with students still on the campus represent significant challenges, according the 58-page report from RRMM Architects.

“Our previous recommendation of what is ‘best’ for FCPS (Fauquier County Public Schools) still stands,” the report says. “We believe that a new consolidated middle school on the Taylor site makes the most sense based on the dollars to be expended, the proximity of Warrenton and Taylor to one another, the existing conditions . . . of the two schools and the long-term benefit to students, staff and community.”

A new school for 800 students on the Taylor site would cost an estimated $45.4 million.

A board of supervisors’ policy requires a referendum — in which county voters would decide the issue — for any project that requires borrowing $25 million or more. The supervisors earlier this year indicated they have no plan to change that policy. That means any plan lacking the school board’s and supervisors’ support would have little chance of passing.

The school board will meet at 10 a.m. Friday to discuss the latest consultants’ report, completed July 26.

All three options would replace Taylor Middle School, built in 1951.

The three options:

• $33.5 million — Retain and renovate all of the existing Warrenton Middle; build additions; reconfigure parking and vehicle access, with second entrance/exit through county garage site to East Shirley Avenue at firehouse.

• $44.8 million — Retain and renovate the original part of Warrenton Middle facing Waterloo Street; demolish 1980s addition and expand school; reconfigure parking and vehicle access, with second entrance/exit through county garage site to East Shirley Avenue at firehouse.

• $45.4 million — Build a new middle school for 800 students on the Taylor campus. It would replace both existing middle schools in Warrenton.
