This Christmas, Fauquier Toys for Tots — a U.S. Marine Corps Reserves project — hopes to help 1,000 children in Fauquier County.

Each year, the charity collects and distributes new, unwrapped toys for needy local children, newborns to age 17.

Toys for Tots started in 1995 “to help less fortunate children throughout the United States experience the joy of Christmas.”

The storefront between NAPA Auto Parts and Sears in the Warrenton Village Shopping Center, serves as this year’s distribution site for the charity.

More than 55 businesses and schools around the county serve as collection sites for dolls, toy trucks, board games and books, among other toys.

“I think we keep reaching more families better,” said Coordinator Heidi Sim, who started the Fauquier chapter five years ago. “More businesses every year get involved with it.”

Citizens can drop off toys at participating businesses until Monday, Dec. 11, and at the distribution site through Friday, Dec. 15.

Citizens also can give money or volunteer their time by organizing toys.

New this year, Cub Scout Pack 957 will “stuff a bus” with toys for the program outside Warrenton’s Walmart from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 10.

The Remington Volunteer Fire and Rescue Department also will collect toys during “Breakfast with Santa” at the firehouse from 8 a.m. to noon Sunday, Dec. 10.

Volunteers at the distribution site count and organize items by categories: toy, book or stocking stuffer.

Toys will get distributed Dec. 14 and 15.

Eligible citizens may fill out applications for assistance at the Fauquier Department of Social Services or the storefront by Friday, Dec. 8, to receive toys.

Last year the charity gave toys to 1,002 children.
