Oktoberfest, Haunted Hollow among best bets

The LOW ‘n’ BROWS German Band will perform at St. John’s Oktoberfest Friday and Saturday.
The Fauquier SPCA celebrates its 60th anniversary on Saturday.
Fall festivals and outdoor activities abound in Fauquier this weekend.

Warrenton’s 38th annual Oktoberfest tops the list, taking place at St. John’s Church Friday and Saturday. The festival features German food and an authentic oompah band.

Beginning Friday, citizens can roam through spooky fiends and barns at Haunted Hollow just outside Warrenton.

Other options include an apple festival in Midland, a hike at Sky Meadows State Park, the Fauquier SPCA anniversary celebration, fall festival near Marshall, and an auction and bake sale near Bealeton.

Dayspring annual benefit auction
3:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 29
5522 Catlett Road, Midland

Dayspring Mennonite Church in Midland hosts its 16th annual bake sale and auction. Homemade pies, cakes, cookies, fry pies and bread will be available for purchase. Auctions featuring furniture, tools, quilts, personal and professional services, and other items start at 5 p.m. Proceeds will benefit three Christian non-profits.

Warrenton Oktoberfest
4 to 9 p.m. Friday and Saturday, Sept. 29-30

St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church hosts its 38th annual Oktoberfest with an authentic German oompah band, carnival games, face painting, corn hole competitions, a petting zoo, moon bounces, a silent auction, vendors and raffles. A White Elephant sale will begin at 10 a.m. Friday and 9 a.m. Saturday. German food, carnival fare and a beer and wine garden also available. Free admission. Food and carnival game prices vary.

Haunted Hollow
Dusk to 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday, Oct. 29-30

Citizens can tour a haunted trail in and around the barns of an abandoned farm in the dark. This weekend marks the opening of the haunted attraction. $18 per person.

Celebrate Virginia Public Lands Day
10 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 30
11012 Edmonds Lane, Delaplane

Sky Meadows State Park hosts a day where citizens can celebrate public land. Park rangers will lead a hike at 10 a.m. to an overlook where volunteers can help plant pollinator friendly plants. A workshop on native plant landscape design and propagation will take place in the afternoon. $5 per vehicle.

Midland Apple Festival
10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 30
10434 Old Carolina Road, Midland

Midland’s annual fall festival includes moon bounces, a petting zoo, games, vendors and homemade apple dumplings and applesauce. Proceeds benefit Midland Christian Academy. Free admission. Rain or shine.

Whiskers and Wags Festival
11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 30
9350 Rogues Road, Midland

The Fauquier SPCA celebrates its 60th anniversary with food, face painting, a doggie kissing booth, vendors, sheriff’s office K-9 demonstrations, and family fun. All hound dog adoptions will be half price for one week. Free admission.

Fresta Valley Fall Festival
3 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 30
6428 Wilson Road, Marshall

The annual fall festival at Fresta Valley Christina School features pony rides, a petting zoo, hot air balloon rides, children’s activities, a silent and live auction, vendors and a square dance. See website for prices. Proceeds benefit the school gym.
