Weekend best bets: Gold Cup, Halloween happenings

The International Gold Cup takes place Saturday with eight different races, tailgating and wagering in The Plains.
The Silver Tones Swing Band hosts a Halloween masquerade dance in Marshall Saturday.
Halloween activities including the annual Warrenton parade, trunk-or-treat at the WARF and a masquerade swing dance top entertainment options in Fauquier.

Other activities include the fall Gold Cup races in The Plains, a fall festival at Sky Meadows State Park, Fauquier High School comedy “The Curious Savage” and several church suppers and bazaars.

Annual trunk-or-treat at the WARF
5:30 to 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 27

Warrenton’s parks and recreation department and Families 4 Fauquier hosts a community Halloween event with candy hand-outs from about 100 vehicles. About 1,500 citizens attended last year’s event. Free.

“The Curious Savage”
7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday, Oct. 27-28

Fauquier High School theatre students present their fall play, “The Curious Savage.” Originally written by John Patrick, the comedy follows Ethel P. Savage, an elderly woman whose deceased husband left her about $10 million. Directed by Emmett Lee Bales. Adults, $7; students, $5.

International Gold Cup races
10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 28
5089 Old Tavern Road, The Plains

The fall tradition at Great Meadow features eight races on steeplechase, hurdle and flat tracks. The event also includes tailgate and hat contests, terrier races and wagering. Rain or shine. Tickets available online, at Harris Teeter stores and other locations. General admission car pass: $75 per vehicle includes up to six people.

Fall farm days at Sky Meadows
10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 28-29
11012 Edmonds Lane, Delaplane

Sky Meadows State Park hosts a family history weekend with living historians, cooking, and blacksmith demonstrations, historic Mount Bleak House tours, children’s activities and a pumpkin patch. $5 per vehicle.

Big Band Halloween Hop
7 to 9:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 28
4133 Rectortown Road, Marshall

The Fauquier Parks and Recreation Department hosts a special masquerade dance. Costumes not required, but encouraged. The Silver Tone Swing Band will perform classic Halloween songs including the Transylvania Polka and Witchcraft at the Marshall Community Center. Beginner swing dance lesson at 7 p.m. Refreshments. $10 per person.

Halloween Happyfest parade
2 to 3 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 29
Main Street, Warrenton

The Town of Warrenton hosts its annual Halloween parade. Children and pets in costume may gather at Fifth Street and parade down Main Street. Free. In case of inclement weather, check the WARF Facebook page for more information.
