Kettle Run High students hope pop music star Katy Perry will perform a concert at the school Friday, Oct. 25.

For that to happen, their video must win a national contest that ABC-TV’s “Good Morning, America” has organized.

GMA invited high school students to submit two-minute videos, set to Ms. Perry’s new single, “Roar.”

Kettle Run senior Olivia O’Hara directed the entry for her school, which she and a production crew of six shot on Saturday, Sept. 28.

“The idea for our video focuses on the struggle of kids all over Fauquier County who are battling cancer and winning with the help and support of our community,” Olivia wrote in an e-mail.

“We assembled our crew and filmed two minutes of what we knew wasn't the biggest or most elaborate production, but more of something that struck a deep chord with not only our school, but our county and community as well; we made a music video that depicted the strength of hundreds through the portrayal of the strength of one,” Oliva wrote in her production notes on YouTube. “What we show in this video is the unity of a school and a town brought together by trials and triumphs, struggles and support.

“Our tiny community has seen more than 10 children in the past few years diagnosed with cancer; it has become a rallying point for us. Younger or older, richer or poorer, regardless of friend group, clique or social status, we have found strength in each other throughout the solemnity of the sickness, and more than anything else our support of each other is what truly defines us as Kettle Run.”

Altogether, the production involved 22 students. KRHS senior Amanda Powell served as co-producer. Fellow seniors Sabrina Ferrero and senior Sam Henson helped with filming. The crew also included Sammie Norden, Zinab Attai, Grant Anderson and Nathan Swift. Oliva’s brother Owen portrayed “Ben.”

Assistant Principal Linda Lee and Building Supervisor Denitress Britt gave students access to the school that Saturday.

GMA hosts will announce the finalists, starting Monday, Oct. 14, and the winner on Friday, Oct. 18, one week before the concert.

“Roar” lyrics:

I used to bite my tongue and hold my breath
Scared to rock the boat and make a mess
So I sat quietly, agreed politely
I guess that I forgot I had a choice
I let you push me past the breaking point
I stood for nothing, so I fell for everything

You held me down, but I got up (HEY!)
Already brushing off the dust
You hear my voice, you hear that sound
Like thunder gonna shake the ground
You held me down, but I got up (HEY!)
Get ready cause I’ve had enough
I see it all, I see it now

[Chorus]
I got the eye of the tiger, a fighter, dancing through the fire
Cause I am a champion and you’re gonna hear me roar
Louder, louder than a lion
Cause I am a champion and you’re gonna hear me roar
Oh oh oh oh oh oh
Oh oh oh oh oh oh
Oh oh oh oh oh oh
You’re gonna hear me roar

Now I’m floating like a butterfly
Stinging like a bee I earned my stripes
I went from zero, to my own hero

You held me down, but I got up (HEY!)
Already brushing off the dust
You hear my voice, you hear that sound
Like thunder gonna shake the ground
You held me down, but I got up (HEY!)
Get ready ’cause I’ve had enough
I see it all, I see it now

[Chorus]
I got the eye of the tiger, a fighter, dancing through the fire
‘Cause I am a champion and you’re gonna hear me roar
Louder, louder than a lion
‘Cause I am a champion and you’re gonna hear me roar
Oh oh oh oh oh oh
Oh oh oh oh oh oh
Oh oh oh oh oh oh
You’re gonna hear me roar
Oh oh oh oh oh oh
Oh oh oh oh oh oh
You'll hear me roar
Oh oh oh oh oh oh
You're gonna hear me roar...

Ro-oar, ro-oar, ro-oar, ro-oar, ro-oar

I got the eye of the tiger, a fighter, dancing through the fire
’Cause I am a champion and you’re gonna hear me roar
Louder, louder than a lion
’Cause I am a champion and you’re gonna hear me roar
Oh oh oh oh oh oh
Oh oh oh oh oh oh
Oh oh oh oh oh oh
You’re gonna hear me roar
Oh oh oh oh oh oh
Oh oh oh oh oh oh
You'll hear me roar
Oh oh oh oh oh oh
You're gonna hear me roar...
