Walnut Grove Baptist building new sanctuary

The congregation of Walnut Grove Baptist Church near Warrenton broke ground Palm Sunday afternoon, March 24, for a new house of worship.

Founded in 1907, Walnut Grove owns two acres on Meetze Road, where the new church will stand near the existing structure. The new church will measure almost 10,000 square feet.

The older structure will continue to house Sunday school and Bible school.

Walnut Grove has 150 members and would like to grow to 350 or more, the Rev. W. Leon Jackson said.

The congregation ranges from 8 months of age to the senior member, Edna Edmonds, 92. The average age is 40.

For the project, church members plan to raise $600,000 through donations, car washes, dinners and other fundraisers

The project will go in three phases, with the foundation, framing and roofing within the first year.
