Winter track athletes finish strong at state finals

Fauquier County produced 10 medaling athletes in last Saturday’s Group AA indoor track championships.

Liberty senior Erin Morant placed second in the triple jump with a distance of 36 feet, 3.25 inches. Morant, who will play volleyball at Catawba College next year, also placed in the high jump.

Her jump of 5.2 feet was good for sixth place.

Morant was one of two Eagles to place at the event. The other Liberty placement belonged to sophomore Taylor Brown.

Brown finished fifth in the 500-meter dash with a time of 1:19.89.

The two athletes helped the Eagles finish 16th out of 42 girls teams with 15 total points.

Kettle Run tied with Brunswick for 17th place in girls team competition. The Cougars finished with 13 points.

Each Kettle Run point came from junior Melvina Brown.

Brown led all county athletes with three placements in Lynchburg.

In the long jump, Brown placed third with a distance of 17 feet, 2.75 inches. She took fifth in the long jump at 35 feet, 4.5 inches.

The athletic junior also placed sixth in the 55-meter hurdles with a time of 8.92 seconds.

Fauquier’s girls finished the event in 19th place with 12 points.

Senior Briana Hill ran the 300-meter dash in 41.64 seconds, good for fifth place. Sophomore Clare Burke placed sixth in the 500-meter dash.

Burke ran the 500-meter in 1:20.24.

Hill and Burke comprised half of the Falcons’ fourth-place 4x400 meter relay team. Senior Sarah Thorton and junior Morgan Ryan also ran the relay.

The foursome finished with a time of 4:11.83.

Tabb took the team high score for girls competition with 56 points.

In boys competition, Fauquier placed 13th out of 36 teams with 16 points.

The Falcons excelled in the pole vault. Senior Grant Holmes placed second in the event with a vault of 14 feet.

Fellow upperclassman Ryan Enos vaulted 13.6 feet for a fourth-place finish.

Like their girls counterparts, the Fauquier boys placed in the 4x400 meter relay.

Freshmen Tyler Benson and Raul Chavez joined juniors Ed and Frank Delavergne on the relay team to run 3:33.13. The time was good for sixth place.

Region II shot put champion Matt Eggers took fifth place in the shot put. The senior’s distance was 46.1 feet.

Fellow senior Carlos Vegerano also placed for the Cougars. Vegerano jumped 6 feet in the high jump, good for eighth place.

Kettle Run’s boys finished 26th in the event with five points.

Blacksburg took first in boys competition with 58 points.
