35th New Teacher Dinner set Thursday, Aug. 9

Fauquier Excellence in Education Foundation will host its 35th annual New Teacher Dinner on Thursday, Aug. 9, at Stoneridge Events Center near Warrenton.

Tickets are $60 per person, which also covers the cost of sponsoring one new educator.

To register and/or donate, visit by Aug. 3.

The event, from 5:30 to 8 p.m., connects new Fauquier County Public Schools teachers with business and community leaders. Spotlighting county students’ artwork, the dinner will feature a cocktail hour with entertainment provided by county teachers, a buffet dinner and an open bar.

The event started in 1984, when the school board appointed local business and community leaders William Armstrong, Thomas diZerega and Hunton Tiffany to serve on a long-range salary task force. That led to establishment of “The Committee for Excellence in Education,” which began a grassroots effort to support new teachers, officially welcoming them at a dinner just before the start of classes. That committee began fundraising to provide grants and professional development opportunities for district teachers.

Five years ago, school officials, school board members, parents and business leaders expanded the organization and renamed it the Fauquier Excellence in Education Foundation. The all-volunteer organization continues to seek partnerships with organizations and businesses that can further its goals.

Through grants and fundraising, the foundation has remodeled the Fauquier Outdoor Lab and Environmental Studies Academy, funded STEM summer camps, sponsored the Regional Science Fair and increased funding for teacher grants. In 2017, the foundation, in partnership with the school district and Lord Fairfax Community College, received the inaugural Governor’s Award for Excellence and Innovation in Education for Community Partnerships and Collaborations.

This year’s dinner will welcome nearly 100 new educators, including teachers, guidance counselors and other certified personnel.
