4-H robotics team hosts open house Saturday

By Carolyn Woodard

Fauquier 4-H will host its first Robotics/STEM open house from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday, April 22, at the county fairgrounds just east of Warrenton.

The RoboPeeps received the VEXIQ Excellence Award in January in their first competition at McLean High School. After placing 16th in the state competitions for VEXIQ Elementary Robotics at Doswell on Feb. 16, the Fauquier RoboPeeps will host the informational open house about their club, which will also feature kid-designed activities relating to robotics and STEM for Fauquier students and families. This open house also will raise funds for the club’s activities and entrance fees for competitions next year.

The open house will include activities such as a Drone Zone, where guests can fly their own drones and watch a commercial drone demonstration, a Battle Bot Arena for guests to bring their own RC vehicles and compete, and a demonstration of the VEXIQ challenge from 2018 and chance to drive the RoboPeeps robot. A Maker Space and trebuchet building activity followed by a marshmallow fight are also planned. There will be activities for young children too, such as a Roomba Race and Draw-a-Robot area. This is not a drop off event, parents are expected to accompany their children and enjoy the activities too.

The Fauquier RoboPeeps hope to expand next year to include an all-girls club in addition to RoboPeeps, and are looking for opportunities to work with local scouts, homeschool clubs, student clubs and local schools to promote interest in STEM careers and 21st-century skills. They also would like to work with local youth organizations and welcome local sponsors.

A few corrections - the Open House is Sunday April 22, from 2-4pm. Tickets are $10 for one child and one adult, or $20 for a family. We also have volunteer shifts available. This is an all ages event with emphasis on activities for elementary and middle school students. Guests are encouraged to bring your own remote control vehicles and drones to use in the activity spaces. The Fairgrounds are wheelchair accessible and the open house welcomes all who want to learn about Robotics.
