9-1-1 communications chief earns national certification

Fauquier County Sheriff’s Office Communications Manager Joell Kight recently graduated from the Certified Public-Safety Executive Course.

Mrs. Kight and 44 professionals nationwide so far have completed the through the Association of Public Safety Communications Officers (APCO).

The course consists of two, 12-week online courses and a nine-day capstone course. The online courses introduce leadership concepts, issues and models as well as exploring how leaders provide vision, manage change and ensure accountability. In the capstone, participants use what they’ve learned during the program to tackle challenging case studies, while taking an in-depth look at their own leadership styles.

The Fauquier County Sheriff’s Office Emergency Communications Division has been affiliated with APCO since 2005, using its training materials to certify all emergency communications specialists in basic telecommunications, emergency medical dispatch, fire service communications and law enforcement communications. In 2014, the Emergency Communications Division received recognition for meeting APCO’s training standards.

Ms. Kight, who has worked in the division for 20 years, recently received the Sheriff Star of Excellence. She oversees a department with 29 full-time employees who handle more than 120,000 calls for service annually.
