First “Domestic Violence Awareness Fair” Oct. 13

The Fauquier Department of Social Services will host is first “Domestic Violence Awareness Fair” on Saturday, Oct. 13.

The event, from noon to 4 p.m. at Liberty High School in Bealeton.

“The event’s theme is ‘Shatter the Silence’,” Case Manager Rochelle Ferguson said. “Domestic violence isn’t something that people like to talk about, but that’s part of the problem. If we don’t highlight it, we hide it. We all — victims and supporters alike — need to break this silence and talk about it so we can stop this horrific cycle.”

The family-friendly fair will feature artisan and food vendors as well as speakers and children’s activities. The department will post Facebook updates on fair activities.

The Fauquier County Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault Advocacy Program, which falls under the DSS umbrella, provides a variety of services to victims of domestic violence and sexual assault. It also works to educate the public, especially youth, to eventually reverse the trends Ms. Ferguson said.

The department seeks vendors and corporate sponsors for the Oct. 13.

“After paying for minimal fair expenses, 100 percent of event proceeds and sponsorships will be used to assist domestic violence victims to relocate to safe places, obtain legal counsel for protective orders and transition to becoming survivors,” Ms. Ferguson said.

Tax-deductible donations can be made payable to Fauquier County DSS with “DV/SA Program” noted in the memo area and mailed to Fauquier County Department of Social Services, Attn: Rochelle Ferguson, 320 Hospital Drive, Warrenton, Va. 20186. Interested vendors can call 540-422-8456 for more information.

October is National Domestic Violence Awareness month.
