Fauquier schools’ average SAT scores up 68 points
This year’s graduates of Fauquier County Public Schools have posted the highest
in the school system’s 30-year history of recording the college admissions tests.
The Class of 2017 here achieved a total average score of 1125 including:
• 575 in reading and writing.
• 550 in math, up 22 points from last year.
This year’s test results reflect scores from the “new” SAT test, which combined reading and writing.
The county public schools’ total average scores rose 68 points from 2004-05, the final year before the SAT changed to three components.
Fauquier County Public Schools had its highest average in 2002-03 with a score of 1058.
This year, Fauquier also exceeded the state and national mean scores:
• Reading and writing — 560 in Virginia, 538 nationally.
• Math — 541 and 533.
Founded as the Scholastic Aptitude Test in 1926, SATs provide a key indicator of schools’ effectiveness in preparing students for their first year of college.
This year, a perfect score reverted back to 1600, as it had been until the writing component’s addition in 2005-06.
The “old” test, used from 2005-06 to 2015-16, included three section scores — critical reading, writing, and math.
