FauquierNow staff receives 20 state journalism awards

FauquierNow news staff members received 20 awards from the Virginia Press Association for writing and photography published last year.

VPA presented the awards at its annual conference last weekend in Richmond.

Staff journalist Don Del Rosso received the “Best in Show” award for writing among online members. Mr. Del Rosso’s winning feature writing portfolio included stories about a new book that tells the story of a lynching in the 1930s, a family reunion that drew 400 people to Casanova and a profile of a Warrenton trash truck driver.

Editor Lawrence Emerson won “Best in Show” for photography, coverage of a tractor-trailer wedged against an office building after failing to make a turn in downtown Warrenton.

FauquierNow’s other awards:

• First place — Mr. Del Rosso’s feature writing portfolio.

• First place — Staff journalist Cassandra Brown’s photo of “River Rat” Greg Beach in the portrait category.

• First place — Mr. Emerson’s story about an overturned propane tanker in breaking news writing.

• First place — Mr. Emerson’s image of first responders taking down a huge flag outside the annual Valor Awards ceremony in the feature photo category.

• First place — Mr. Emerson’s photo of the tractor-trailer stuck downtown in the breaking news photo category.

• Second place — Ms. Brown in education writing for stories about a teacher who writes songs, a 91-year-old who earned a college degree and about the summer program that teaches Arabic and Turkish.

• Second place — Mr. Del Rosso in general news writing for coverage of the proposed 14-bed addiction recovery center in Warrenton.

• Second place — Ms. Brown in business writing for stories about warm winter’s effects on orchards and vineyards, Skeeter’s Saddles and hydroponic lettuce growers.

• Second place — Mr. Emerson for a pictorial photo of the Warrenton Christmas Parade finale.

• Second place — Mr. Emerson for a slideshow of the annual MLK Day ceremony in Warrenton.

• Second place — Ms. Brown for a general news photo of a wounded Marine veteran touring the special home built for him near Sumerduck.

• Second place — Ms. Brown for a photo portrait of saddle maker “Skeeter” Hambry.

• Second place — Ms. Brown for feature writing portfolio — stories about a “River Rat,” a dentist who keeps bees outside his office and a home built of straw bales.

• Second place — Mr. Emerson in feature writing for a story about a small Warrenton company that helps Haitian villages make and export items for sale in the U.S.

• Third place — Ms. Brown’s feature photo of excited Fauquier High graduate Grace Green at graduation.

• Third place — Mr. Emerson for a general news photo from the forum to address online threats at Liberty High School.

• Third place — Ms. Brown’s photo slideshow about the dentist beekeeper.

• Third place — Mr. Emerson for business writing — stories about Fauquier Hospital’s record profit, the closing of a Main Street gift shop and new Fauquier Health CEO Chad Melton.

Based on points for each award, FauquierNow finished second in the Sweepstakes award in news. Charlottesville Tomorrow earned that award.

The Fauquier Times won the Grand Sweepstakes Award, based on total advertising and news points, among the state’s largest non-daily newspapers.

FauquierNow has received 72 state press association awards in the last four years.

No wonder Fauquier Now went into radio silence over the weekend. Looks like everyone was in Richmond picking up awards! Congrats.
