A Greenville Elementary student will appear on an exciting new game show, “Genius Junior” which celebrates some of the brightest children in America.
Hosted and produced by Neil Patrick Harris, “Genius Junior” airs Sundays at 9 p.m. on NBC. It premiered March 18.
Fourth-grader Melody Harlan stars as one of the contestants on “The Brainy Bunch” team on the Sunday, March 25 episode.
During the course of the show, 12 teams compete in a series of increasingly complex quizzes with the goal of being crowned Genius Junior. Each one-hour episode, features two teams competing against one another.
Each team of three is composed of incredible children ages 8 to 12 from around the country.
The winning team from each episode gets to take The Cortex — the toughest test of smarts on the planet — to build up their prize fund, according to the game show website.
During the filming in California, Melody, 9, and her two teammates solved complex math problems, spelled difficult words and used memorization to compete against other students.
“I had an amazing time learning, filming, meeting new people, and having lots of fun,” Melody said. “I’ll never forget the experience.”
Melody loves memory games, math, reading and spelling. She recently won the Fauquier County Regional Spelling Bee and earned a third place award at the Freelance Star Regional Spelling Bee on March 17.
“She’s developed this pattern of setting a goal and doing the work to achieve it,” said her father Scott. “Her mother and I always tell her to do her best and have fun. What I’m most proud of is the way that she works hard and keeps a great attitude about it.”
In Melody’s leisure time she swims, practices ballet, and contributes to community and school clubs such as a Kindness Club, Drama Club, Newspaper Club, Battle of the Books, and Girl Scouts.
