Remington intersection meeting Monday, April 22

The plan would allow no left turns onto Route 29 from Freemans Ford Road. Motorists would turn right and then make u-turns.
Lee District Supervisor Chris Butler will host public meeting Monday, April 22, on the proposed safety improvements to the James Madison Highway intersection at Freeman’s Ford Road near Remington.

The 7 p.m. meeting will take place at the Remington Lions Club building just north of town.

The Virginia Department of Transportation proposed a $7.1-million project to improve the deadly intersection just west of Remington. Among other things, the plan calls for removing the traffic signal and prohibiting left turns at the intersection for east-west traffic.

In February, however, the Remington Town Council voted, 6-0, to oppose the plan. That caught Mr. Butler and state officials by surprise. In May 2018, the town council had approved a resolution supporting upgrades to the intersection.

Remington officials had received “almost entirely negative comments from citizens” after details of the VDOT plan became public in January, according to the resolution the town council adopted in February.

Three people have died in accidents at the intersection in recent years.

Will 9-1-1 emergency vehicles be able to cross the intersection straight up? Or will they have to also do this do-si-do turn around to get across the highway? Not very clear on how this will work.
I would think law enforcement of this stretch of highway would be the best deterrent to speeders and phone addicts endangering lives.

This design looks like another "Hoop Dream" VDOT experiment in Fauquier county that will cause some to make 180 degree turn instead of a 90 degree, thus penalizing those that do follow the law instead of enforcing the law against those that try to beat those lights.

This is not complicated.
a) Lower the speed limit thru this 1-2 mile stretch.
b) Take that money put in a camera enforcement system and tag reading technology that can monitor this and start electronically attacking those that run that light if they cannot clear the intersection. Period!
c) And then monitor and vigorously enforce it!!

They'll figure it and quickly too after a few tickets. Problem solved, lives saved, same amount of investment, no inconvenience to law abiding drivers.

Just like to whole gun issue, stop making if difficult for law abiding citizens and starting attacking those that break the laws that are already written!

Sounds to me like the Remington residents are smarter than VDOT and the FCBS.

Good for them for denial of this plan!
