A national magazine this month features New York artist Carter Hodgkin, a Warrenton native, in its cover profile.

A nine-page spread in SciArt Magazine includes a Q&A interview with Ms. Hodgkin and examples of her work — “paintings, animations, and mosaics inspired by particle
physics and natural forms.”

She told the magazine’s editor: “After art school in the late ’70s, I lived in San Francisco. I was focused on painting and had no special interest in science or technology. But I was exposed to computer programming and digital imaging emerging from Silicon Valley and was impressed by the idea of encoding images into bits and bytes.”

Ms. Hodgkin last year installed a large glass tile mosaic under commission for the Neiman Marcus department store in Beverly Hills, Calif. The Wilshire Boulevard store’s mosaic covers 190 square feet. It uses 30,162 tiles to realize the digital design, with each pixel corresponding to an individual tile.

Ms. Hodgkin earned a bachelor’s degree in fine arts from Virginia Commonwealth University. She has earned fellowships from the Pollock Krasner Foundation, the Adolph and Esther Gottlieb Foundation and the New York Foundation for the Arts. She lives in New York City and teaches at the Parsons School of Design.

This is fascinating, very interesting, unique, creative, intellectual - how many words can I use? Congratulations on your success, Carter.

Fortunately, you got your award before the Trump administration removes all scientific literature, and all arts, from us.
