Sheriff’s office investigating incident at bus stop

A man approached a 10-year-old girl Wednesday morning in Sumerduck.
A 10-year-old student reported a suspicious encounter with a stranger at her Sumerduck school bus stop Wednesday morning, according to the Fauquier County Sheriff’s Office.

The incident took place just before 8 a.m. in the area of Sumerduck Road and Meadowlark Lane, Sgt. James Hartman said.

The girl “reported that while she was waiting for the school bus at the end of her driveway, a dark colored mini-van or SUV type vehicle pulled into the driveway,” Sgt. Hartman wrote in a press release. “The vehicle was driven by an older white male with a wrinkled face and gray hair. This individual is further described as wearing glasses on his head, white stained t-shirt, dark suspenders and denim jeans . . . .

“The child reported the driver attempted to engage her in conversation and when he offered her a ride to school she walked back to her house and reported the encounter to an adult. The vehicle was last seen leaving the driveway onto Sumerduck Road toward Route 17.”

The gird described the vehicle as “dark in color, with scratches on the side and a dent somewhere on the rear, bearing a white license plate with dark letters containing a 0 in the number/letter sequence.”

The sheriff’s office continues to investigate and asks that anyone with information call 540-347-3300.
