Sheriff’s Sgt. Murray killed 25 yeas ago in line of duty

Fauquier County sheriff’s Sgt. Charles E. Murray Jr., 27, of Goldvein, died in the line of duty 25 years ago today — on July 9, 1990.

From the Officer Down Memorial Page:

Sergeant Charles Murray was killed when his unmarked patrol car was struck by an Amtrak passenger train at an un-gated crossing on Eustace Road (near Calverton).

He was en route to serve a warrant at the time of the crash.

Sergeant Murray had served with the Fauquier County Sheriff's Office for 10 years. He was survived by his wife, parents, and sister.

A memorial outside the county detention center in Warrenton honors Sgt. Murray and Deputy John H. Walter, killed in a 1972 traffic accident.
