Smith-Midland wins big contract for I-395 project

The Fauquier company will supply more than 23 miles of precast concrete safety barriers for the $336-million express lane project.
Lane Construction Corp. has awarded Fauquier-based Smith-Midland Corp. the contract to supply more than 124,000 linear feet — or 23 miles — of J-J Hooks precast concrete safety barrier for the Interstate 395 Express Lane project in Northern Virginia.

The Virginia Department of Transportation’s $336-million, design-build project will extend the express lanes along an eight-mile section of I-395 in Fairfax and Arlington counties. It should significantly reduce the congestion of commuter traffic into Washington, D.C.

“This is the latest step in our ongoing effort to move more people and provide more travel choices in one of the most congested corridors of the country,” Gov. Terry McAuliffe said.

Beginning this fall and running until project completion in the spring of 2020, Smith-Midland will manufacture, deliver and set both free-standing and bolt-down versions of its J-J Hooks Barrier.

“J-J Hooks were developed by us in 1990 and have proven through years of in-field performance and constant product improvements to be a cost-effective and reliable solution for our contractor clients,” Smith-Midland President Ashley Smith said. “Providing safety for motorists and workers on a project of this caliper is something we are very proud of.”

Over the course of the 2-1/2-year project, Smith-Midland also will provide resetting services, redeploying the barrier as the work progresses.

Headquartered in Midland, the publicly-traded company (OTCQX: SMID) develops, manufactures, and sells a range of precast concrete products, primarily for use in the construction, transportation and utilities industries. Smith-Midland has manufacturing facilities in Midland, Reidsville, N.C., and Columbia, S.C.
