Supervisors again elect Chris Butler as chairman

His colleagues last Thursday elected Chris Butler (Lee District) to serve again as chairman of the Fauquier County Board of Supervisors.
For the second consecutive year, the Lee District representative will lead the five-member county board of supervisors.

The board last Thursday unanimously elected Chris Butler to chair the panel in 2019. The supervisors also elected Mary Leigh McDaniel (Marshall) to serve as vice chairwoman — a post she held last year.

Both will serve one-year terms in the posts.

Traditionally, the vice chairperson succeeds the chairperson to lead the board. That didn’t happen in 2019.

“We had a lot of internal discussion about it,” said Ms. McDaniel, suggesting she passed on the opportunity to head the board because of a busy 2019 schedule. “It’s an election year. We’re all going to be busy with that.”

The board’s five incumbents expect to seek another four-year term in the November general election. To date, no one has announced plans to challenge them.

The first-term Marshall supervisor last January became managing partner of Updegrove, McDaniel, McMullen and Chiccehito, an accounting firm with offices in Warrenton and Leesburg.

The added responsibilities of that position also influenced her decision not seek the chair

“There’s a lot going on,” Ms. McDaniel said.

The supervisors agreed to re-elect Ms. McDaniel and Mr. Butler to the leadership posts because they believe two did a good job heading the board in 2018.

“It’s teamwork, and we have a good team,” Mr. Butler, a first-term supervisor and safety director for Gainesville-based contractor S.W. Rodgers Co., said in text.

As chairman, Mr. Butler helps shape meeting agendas, works closely with staff and generally represents Fauquier County government on key issues.

The chairman receives $21,378 and the vice chairman $19,821 annually; the other board members get $18,267. Board members also qualify for health insurance through the county.

The chairman leads meetings, represents the county at ceremonies and makes appointments to board committees.

Supervisor Holder Trumbo (Scott District) missed board’s Jan. 3 organizational meeting.
