Taylor Middle School student on fast track
Bradley Kilby, 14, of Bealeton, won 10 of his 15 races in Bandolero cars this year.
“It’s really fun and pretty challenging,” Bradley says of racing.
The 14-year-old loves the thrill of racing miniature stock cars.
For the past four years, Taylor Middle School eighth-grader Bradley Kilby has raced
Bradley started out racing go-karts at Summit Point in West Virginia at age 7.
“I really got into it and then I started running championships in go karts,” Bradley said. “Since I was doing so good, my dad introduced me to Bando.”
Bradley’s father, Wesley, had experience with motocross, but wanted a safer sport for his son.
“We were looking to get him into something at a young age,” said Mr. Kilby.
So they purchased a Bandolero — a miniature stock car — and learned how to work on it.
“He puts in as many hours in the car as I do,” Mr. Kilby said. “That makes him a better driver.”
For the last three years, Bradley’s vehicle has been fully sponsored by several local businesses.
Equipped with a roll cage, the vehicle can go up to 70 mph.
Each race consists of 15 to 20 laps on an oval track.
“It’s really fun and pretty challenging,” Bradley said.
This year, he finished first in 10 of the 15 races.
In October, he won the championship race at Dominion Raceway in Spotsylvania County.
Bradley practices driving with a simulator during off-season — November through March.
“I really want to race for NASCAR. That’s my big dream,” said Bradley whose favorite driver is Dale Earnhardt Jr.
Next year, he will compete against adults in a full size stock car with 355 horsepower.
