Week 2 football recap: All three county teams lose

Liberty falls in opener

Despite more than 400 yards of total offense, Liberty lost its season opener to visiting Woodgrove, 41-24.

The Eagles fell behind, 24-7, late in the first half after the Wolverines (2-0) recovered a fumble and an onside kick.

Liberty senior quarterback Joe Glass passed for 209 yards. Junior wide receiver Markael Gaskins caught three passes for 104 yards and a touchdown.
The Eagles piled up 454 yards to 314 for Woodgrove.

Liberty will visit King George (2-0) next Friday night. The Foxes won, 20-0, at Essex on Friday.


Falcons lose early lead and game

Fauquier lost, 21-12, Friday night to Heritage (2-0) in Leesburg.

The Falcons (1-1) jumped out to a 12-0 lead but couldn’t capitalize on scoring opportunities thereafter.

Fauquier will host Handley (1-0) next Friday night. The Judges beat Warren County, 29-2, in their season opener. Handley will play Saturday afternoon, Sept. 3, at Harrisonburg.


Patriots defeat Cougars

Kettle Run fell, 39-23, to visiting Albemarle (1-1) on Friday night.

The Cougars (0-2) produced more than 400 years of offense but committed five turnovers.

Kettle Run senior receiver Tony Rocca had six catches for 184 yards and a touchdown. Junior quarterback Casen Chumley completed 17 of 37 passes for 282 yards and two touchdowns.

The Cougars will visit Petersburg (1-0) next Friday night. The Crimson Wave won, 37-12, at Nottoway in the Aug. 26 season opener.
