Fauquier’s Relay for Life features 43 teams Saturday
Fauquier’s Relay for Life begins at 6 p.m. Saturday, June 10.
Fauquier’s 22nd annual Relay for Life fundraising walk begins Saturday, June 10.
More than 600 local citizens, businesses, schools, churches and others will participate in the 24-hour walking event around Fauquier High School’s track to celebrate cancer survivors and honor loved ones.
The opening ceremony begins at 6 p.m. Saturday with survivor and caretaker laps.
The luminaria ceremony, remembering those lost to cancer, opens at 9:30 p.m.
Forty-three teams in Fauquier have raised almost $60,000 this year for cancer research, education and prevention through the American Cancer Society.
Fauquier’s Relay for Life hopes to reach a $122,000 goal this year.
Volunteers will take turns walking Fauquier’s track until the closing ceremony at 6 a.m. Sunday, June 11.
The public is invited and encouraged to come. Attendees don’t have to stay the entire night.
“It’s a free, family event and there will be games, music, activities, food, fun and community engagement,” said Christina Ballard who chairs the event.
“We want the survivors and the families of the survivors to know that they are not alone in their cancer journey,” Ms. Ballard said. “They have a larger support group that they even know they have. We come as strangers and leave as family.”
Last year, Fauquier participants raised $119,418 through Relay for Life.
