“Lake Dennie” dedication set Sunday, May 5

The Town of Warrenton will be dedicate the lake at the Warrenton Sports Complex to former Town Councilman and Recreation Committee member, Dennie Sutherland on Sunday, May 5 at 2 p.m.

The lake is located in the Warrenton Sports Complex located at 800 Waterloo Road. Town council members, town staff and the Sutherland family will be present at the event. The public is encouraged to attend and help celebrate the memory of Dennie and the legacy he left behind.

Dennie was a strong advocate for parks and recreation in the Warrenton community and was instrumental in helping to develop many of the amenities now located at the Warrenton Sports Complex. The Town of Warrenton hopes the dedication of “Lake Dennie” will help not only commemorate his amazing work, but will also help the community to remember his warm, kind and selfless spirit.

The Warrenton Sports Complex features seven rectangular playing fields (, paved hiking paths, an inline skating rink, the Warrenton Skate Park, the new Claude Moore Fun For All Playground as well as the Warrenton Aquatic and Recreation Facility (WARF).

Dennie passed away on August 10, 2010 at the age of 64, just weeks before the completion of the Fun For All Playground for which he was so dedicated to helping bring to life. He worked for many years as the manager of The Paint Shop in Warrenton and more recently worked with Piedmont Dispute Resolution in Warrenton and the Restorative Justice Program in Prince William County. He also was a serving member of the Town Council of Warrenton and the Town Recreation Committee.

The Claude Moore Fun For All Playground was constructed for all children, with particular focus on accessibility for children with disabilities. The park is designed to help all children with physical, social and psychological development and provides a place where children of differing abilities and their families can come together and have fun.

The ceremony and lake dedication on May 5 will celebrate Dennie’s many contributions to the Warrenton community.
