Wanted: Someone to fill local restaurant void

By
Warrenton
By Todd Middleton

I am a lifelong resident of Fauquier and am tiring of the large number of restaurants with mediocre- to poor-quality food AND service in our area.

In this tough economy, dining out is a real treat. What's not a treat is trying to pick the least-worst local eatery to patronize.

What's missing in the Warrenton area is a talented, motivated, passionate chef and owner. Someone with a creative, fresh approve to the food service industry. Where it's missing is the location: 6806 James Madison Highway, Warrenton, Va.

Ben and Mary's Steakhouse in days past was not only a larger than life landmark, but the owners provided great food, even better service and consistency in their product. It's where everyone went to get a great steak and a good drink for a family night out.

That type of restaurant never goes out of style and will thrive even in poor economic times. I hope someone out there is reading and listening to this and accepts the challenge of opening a real restaurant in a great location. In the mean time, I'll fire up my backyard grill to cook my own steaks . . . and wait.

The economy is taking a big toll on restaurants many of which seem to be cutting corners, downsizing portions, and limiting choices. That being said, it doesn't bode well for any new place being able to sell high quality/quantity steaks at good prices. When I moved here in 1996 I heard great things about B & M's but didn't go for a few years. When I did, I think it had changed hands and was pretty bad. I never went back. I agree with those who complained of the location. It's not very safe. But, I agree that Warrenton has few reasonably priced good quality restaurants nor does it have much entertainment. The movies closed years and years ago with no replacement. It seems we only get banks and fast food. Blah!

i like that facebook comment about getting kevin whitener in there. county should buy it, establish as a landmark, stick kevin in there, have him serve the most awesome local beef steaks that can be found.....it will be like heaven!!!i
and make sure that ben and mary's pictures and some of marshall hawkins pictures are hanging on the wall.

The problem with the Ben and Mary's location is Rt. 17 with southbound traffic/tractor trailers going 65-70 coming up over a ridge 1/4 mile up from the restaurant. You can't pull out of the parking lot and get up to speed before being crushed. You also are in danger slowing down to turn into the parking lot as drivers going 60-65 tend not to pay attention to turn signals. Also, many people simply don't use turn signals, and certainly don't use them far enough from their turn to warn drivers in back of them. It just isn't a feasible place for any business.

"It's where everyone went to get a great steak and a good drink for a family night out."

It's nice to hear the old days were good at this place; This vindicates the opinions from my friends who I thought were insane with their positive comments about this place. From 2003 on (when we first dined here), however, the quality of the meat was atrocious, portions were puny, the vegetables were obviously canned and tasted so, the building was dank and dreary and the service was absolutely laughable... 25 minutes for the salads? All this and the prices were in the high teens per seat. You've got to be kidding.

I didn't think it was possible, but this place made Country Cookin seem great. Country Cookin likely has canned veggies as well, but at least they don't taste like it.

If you are going to charge three times the price as Country Cookin for worse food, I will go to Country Cookin.

"That type of restaurant never goes out of style and will thrive even in poor economic times."

Obviously not. A "dive" won't "thrive."

Everyone from the Criminal Justice System used to go in there for lunch at least once a week in the 80's and 90's. You would see judges, deputies, probation officers--everybody! I adored the tuna salad plate!
