Warrenton Middle School readers excel in contest

Warrenton Middle School’s Battle of the Books teams.
Warrenton Middle School teams took second and third place among 24 squads in the Piedmont Regional Battle of the Books tournament Saturday, April 5, in Woodbridge.

The competition included 13 schools from four counties competed. A team from the host school, Porter Traditional Middle School in Woodbridge, won the tournament, edging the WMS second-place team, 1,054 to 1,048.

All five Fauquier County middle schools competed in the regional tournament. The Marshall Middle School team finished fourth.

Battle of the Books is a voluntary reading incentive program whose participants read from the book list provided for the current year’s “battle” and then come together at a tournament to compete with fellow middle schoolers to test their knowledge of the books.

The tournament consists of three rounds. In round one, all participants answer 50 multiple-choice questions.

In round two, teams answer 100 questions against other school teams.

In the final round, students must identify 10 quotes from the 20 books on this year’s Battle of the Books list. Total scores from the three rounds determine the winner.
