Obituaries » Elmer A. O’Bannon Jr.

Elmer A. O’Bannon Jr., 83, of Hartwood, passed away Monday, December 10, 2018, at his home. He passed with the peace of Jesus Christ in the arms of his wife, Barbara.

Mr. O’Bannon was born in November 1935, in Marshall, to the late Elmer A. O’Bannon Sr. and Rachel Fair O’Bannon.

He was a school bus driver in Fauquier County while attending Marshall High School. After high school, he joined the Naval Reserve and was a flight engineer.

Mr. O’Bannon spent his entire career in the electric utility business. He was employed by Virginia Electric and Power Col in Fairfax. The rest of his career was with electric distribution cooperatives, beginning with Northern Piedmont Electric Cooperative in Culpeper, which became Rappahannock Electric Cooperative, and ending with Northern Virginia Electric Cooperative in Manassas.

Many long term relationships were formed in all aspects of Elmer’s life. He volunteered many hours to the American Red Cross and the Boy Scouts of America and was a member of the Lions Club and the Rotary Club.

Throughout his Christian life, Elmer was a member of the Marshall Baptist Church, Culpeper Baptist Church and, most recently, Richland Baptist Church in Hartwood.

Survivors include his loving wife of 32 years, Barbara Lillard Payne O’Bannon; sons Frederick Peterson (Pam) of Marshall, Gareth O’Bannon (Flora) of Spotsylvania, Timothy O’Bannon (Tabitha) of Jeffersonton and Thomas Payne of Culpeper; grandchildren Heather Peterson, Holly O’Bannon, Sean O’Bannon (Bailey), Jason Peterson, Peter O’Bannon, Colleen O’Bannon, Barbara Payne, Marshal O’Bannon, Russell Payne, and Jason Smith (Jana); great-grandchildren Lola and Beaumont Smith; devoted sister-in-law Jeannetta Hawkins, and sweet dog Sassafrass Snaggletooth Ragamuffin.

He was preceded in death by sister Brenda Joyce O’Bannon and a special Aunt Hazel and Uncle Hicks.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, December 14, at Covenant Funeral Service in Fredericksburg. The funeral will be held at noon on Saturday, December 15, at Richland Baptist Church in Hartwood. Burial will follow in the Flint Hill United Methodist Church Cemetery.

Memorial contributions be made to Richland Baptist Church, 2482 Warrenton Road, Fredericksburg, Va. 22406.
