Elsie Ruth Mayo, 90, passed away peacefully July 16, 2017, at her home in Warrenton.
She was born June 26, 1927, in Ashland, and graduated from Tappahannock High School. She joined the Cadet Nurse Corps in 1945 and attended nursing school at St. Luke’s Hospital in Richmond. There she received her diploma as a registered nurse in 1948 and began her nursing career. She married William “Bill” Mayo in March 1948. They celebrated 69 years of marriage March 4, 2017.
Mrs. Mayo dedicated her life to her husband and children and instilled in them the importance of love of family and devotion to God. She was a member of Bethel United Methodist Church for more than 50 years and participated in UMW and Bible study groups. She was well-known for her gardening skills and tended the church yard flowers for many years until her health declined.
Survivors include her devoted husband, William C. Mayo of Warrenton; their children, Theresa Huffman of Powhatan, William C. Mayo Jr. of South Daytona Beach, Fla., Patricia Stine of Jeffersonton and Karen Putnam of Warrenton; her grandchildren, Ted Huffman of Henrico, Beth Wharton of Midlothian, Becky Stine of Jeffersonton and Mike Stine of Culpeper; her great grandchildren, Caroline Huffman, Paul Huffman, Jackson Wharton and Connor Wharton, and her brother, Marvin H. Broach of White Plains, Md.
She was preceded in death by parents, Hutchinson and Ruth Broach of Index; a sister, Frances Wilt of San Diego, and a brother, William Webster Broach of Lake Placid, Fla.
The family will receive friends from 11 a.m. to noon Tuesday July 18, when the funeral will begin at Bethel United Methodist Church, 6903 Blantyre Road, Warrenton. A reception will follow in the church social. Interment will take place at 1 p.m. Wednesday, July 19, at Forest Lawn Cemetery 4000 Pilots Lane, Richmond. A reception at the home of Theresa Huffman in Powhatan.
