Bernice Irene Derrow Hoffman, 93, of Broad Run, passed away, surrounded by her family, on September 16, 2017, at Fauquier Hospital.
She was born January 30, 1924, in Harrisonburg, to the late William Charles Derrow and Katherine Koontz Derrow.
Mrs. Hoffman worked for the American Red Cross in Alexandria and retired in 1989 from the Fairfax County government as supervisor of finance and accounting. She was a charter member of Our Saviour Lutheran Church in Warrenton. She is remembered as an avid duckpin bowler who enjoyed flowers, bird-watching and cooking and was a devoted wife.
She is survived by her children, Linda Figgins and husband Ray of Star Tannery, Catherine Palmateer and husband Steve of New Paris, Pa., and Sandra Benfit and husband Joe of Broad Run; two nieces, Sherry Groves and Jackie Estes; four grandchildren, Renee Breeding, Meridith Wilhelm, Bruce Stocking and Laura Jones; nine great grandchildren, Alyssa, Andrew, Ashleigh, Alyson, Austin, A. J., Abbie, Faith and Jacob; and a great-great grandchild, Layla.
She was preceded in death by her husband, John Lynwood Hoffman; her daughter, Laura Ann Hoffman Harris; an infant son; a granddaughter, Erin Rae Figgins; a brother, Weldon Charles Derrow; her stepmother, Elizabeth Meredith Flory Derrow, and a nephew, Jeff Derrow.
The family thanks the staffs of Burke Health and Rehabilitation Center, Blue Ridge Christian Home and the Fauquier Hospital for their kind and caring service.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, September 19, at Our Saviour Lutheran Church near Warrenton. The funeral will take place at 11 a.m. Wednesday, September 20, at the church. A second funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday, September 20, at Gravel Springs Lutheran Church in Star Tannery. Interment will follow at the church cemetery.
