Obituaries » Judy Annette Cooke Funkhouser

Judy Annette Cooke Funkhouser, 65, of Warrenton, passed away peacefully on Feb. 24, 2017, following a long physical illness.

She was born Aug. 24, 1951, in Westgrove, Pa., to the late Calvin Wesley Cooke and Mildred Messick Cooke, who survives.

Following graduation from Fauquier High School, she enjoyed a long career, beginning with The Fauquier Democrat and moving on to Swain Printing and Stationery, The Fauquier Bank, Fauquier Adult Learning Center, Midland Christian Academy, and Drs. Snyder and Couk. Most recently Mrs. Funkhouser worked at Blue Ridge Orthopaedic and Spine Center in Warrenton. She grew up attending Midland Church of the Brethren and recently attended Calverton Baptist Church

Although she never had children of her own, Mrs. Funkhouser had a heart for teaching and caring for the young. She served as a literacy volunteer in local schools and was delighted to see young people learn to read. She wrote several children’s songs and stories, having one published, The Little Green Seldom Seen Mobile Mouse House.  All proceeds are donated to The Lost Boys of the Sudan.
Mrs. Funkhouser’s other great pleasure came from her relationships with her nieces and nephews, too numerous to name. She and her husband served as substitute parents to their nephew Benjamin Cooke before his untimely death while serving in the U.S. Army in 2008.

Survivors include her loving husband of 45 years, Gordon Funkhouser; her mother, Mildred Cooke; her sisters, Revonda Layton and husband Paul and Patsy Coffman and husband Dwight; her brother, Charles Wesley Cooke and wife Billie Jayne, and many beloved nieces, nephews and extended family. Her sweet presence and unconditional love for others will be deeply missed.

The family will receive friends from 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 26, 2017, at Moser Funeral Home in Warrenton. The funeral will take place at 2 p.m. Monday, Feb. 27, at the Midland Church of the Brethren. Interment will follow the service in the Church Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to Midland Christian Academy, 10456 Old Carolina Road, Midland, Va. 22728.
