Obituaries » Mabel S. “Peggy” Lucas

Mabel Shanahan “Peggy” Lucas, of Midland, passed away quietly on Sunday, July 2, 2017, just prior to her 102nd birthday.

She was born and raised in Bennington, Vermont, the fourth of five children of William Shanahan and Martha Sweet Shanahan.

Mrs. Lucas graduated from Samaritan Hospital School of Nursing in Troy, New York. It was there she met her husband, Al Lucas, a student at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. At the start of World War II, Mr. Lucas joined the Marine Corps and went to the Pacific for four years while Mrs. Lucas and Al Jr. remained in Bennington. At war’s end, Mr. Lucas remained in the Corps, attaining the rank of colonel. While traveling to various duty stations for the next 26 years, Mrs. Lucas was an outstanding military wife. She took on many responsibilities, such as member of the Navy Relief Advisory Board, heading Red Cross blood drives, Officer’s Wives Club president and hostess for innumerable military social functions.

Upon retirement from the Corps, Col. Lucas became the City Manager of Selma, North Carolina. Mrs. Lucas used her background as a registered nurse to build the medical groundwork for the North Carolina Head Start program. Later she started the first thriving real estate business in Selma, Colonial Realty. After Mr. Lucas suddenly passed away in 1971, she was persuaded to enter local politics. She served as a member of the Selma City Council and later as mayor.

After 25 years, she retired from real estate and moved to her son’s home in Midland, where she lived until her death.

A loving mother and grandmother, Mrs. Lucas is survived by her son, Al and daughter-in-law Terry, three grandchildren, Al, Bill and Donna, nine great-grandchildren and one great-great grandson. She will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved her.

Mrs. Lucas will be interred with her husband at Arlington National Cemetery on a later date.
