Obituaries » Melba S. Jones

Melba Singletary Jones, 99, of The Plains, departed this life on March 1, 2019, at home, surrounded by loved ones. 

Melba was born May 5, 1919, in Coolidge, Texas, to the late John Henry Singletary and Jennie Lee Pickett.

She attended business school and was secretary/treasurer of Lampasas Co, Texas, Bank of Houston. She ran the family business, The Trading Post, until she was widowed in May 1972. She moved to Killeen, Texas, where she raised her 15-year-old son, Greg Jones, and helped raise her grandson, Christopher. She was an avid gardener and member of the Killeen Garden Club, where she was their treasurer for 12 years. She enjoyed making beautiful floral arrangements for flower shows.

Melba is survived by her children, Karen Wendlandt of Romsey of Hampshire, UK, Brenda Kennedy of Cibolo, Texas, and Greg Jones and his wife Judy of The Plains; her grandchildren, Russell Jones, deceased, Andrew Jones and Kaileigh Ashby of Charleston, S.C., Chris and Christy Kennedy of Brighton, Colo., John and Jen Kennedy of Waltham, Mass., and four great-grandchildren, Waylen Kennedy, Skylar Kennedy, Gabriel Kennedy, and Ben Kennedy (anticipated birth in May). 

She was preceded in death by her husband, Hubert Burnie Jones; her sisters, Ruby Faye, and Lucile Striegel, and her brother, J.C. Mathews. 

The funeral will take place at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 9, at Saint James’ Episcopal Church in Warrenton. Internment will take place at Little Georgetown Cemetery near Broad Run, followed by a reception at Saint James’.
