Obituaries » John E. Chadwick

Retired U.S. Army Lt. Col. John Earl Chadwick, 90, of Blackwood, N.J., passed away on Monday May 1, 2017.

He was born in Philadelphia to the late Leon and Theresa Chadwick.

Lt. Col. Chadwick proudly served in the U.S. Army for 27 years with distinction, earning several medals, including the Legion of Merit, Bronze Star, Bronze Star with V Device, WWII Victory Medal, Korean Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal and Combat Infantryman Badge. He was a veteran of World War II, and the Korean and Vietnam Wars.

While in the service, he earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of Maryland and his master’s degree from American University. Upon retiring from the Army in 1973, Lt. Col. Chadwick became a teacher and coach at Fauquier High School in Warrenton. After his retirement from teaching and a heart attack, he made it a personal goal to spread the Word of God, teaching Bible studies for almost 30 years at the Brooksville United Methodist Church in Florida, Oak Shade United Methodist Church in Virginia and the Blackwood United Methodist Church in New Jersey.

He was predeceased by his wife of 51 years, Erma (nee Price), and two children, John Chadwick Jr. and Karen Robinson.

Survivors include his wife Alice (nee Price); his son, Bruce Chadwick and wife Dawn, his daughter, Karol Graves and husband Gary and daughter-in law, Bonnie Chadwick, all of Virginia; five grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; his stepchildren, Andrew Martin and wife Tammy, Albert Martin and wife Stella of New Jersey, Arlene Smith and husband Timm and Alice Martin of Florida; eight step-grandchildren; four step-great grandchildren, and a brother, Leon Chadwick of Williamstown, N.J.

Interment will full military honors will be held at a future date at Arlington National Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Blackwood United Methodist Church, 35 E. Church St., Blackwood, N.J. 08012; Gloucester Township EMS, Attn: Donations, P.O. Box 1658, Blackwood, N.J. 08012, or Camden County Animal Shelter, 125 County House Road, Sewell, N.J. 08080.
