Obituaries » Richard J. Bird

Richard John Bird, 85, of Jeffersonton, died January 5, 2018, at Fauquier Hospital.

He was born October 9, 1932, in Manhattan, New York, N.Y., to the late Richard and Rose Bird (Mendonca).

Mr. Bird was a paratrooper in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He was active in the U.S. Army reserves for eight years.

He retired from the Northern Virginia Electric Cooperative, where he worked as a graphic designer. In his spare time, Mr. Bird enjoyed reading, photography, playing piano and violin and American and Civil War history. He and his wife completed bicycling several sections of the famous GAP & C&O Canal Rail trails. He was a lay pastor and enjoyed studying the Bible and attending Biblical conferences. He was a member of
Warrenton Bible Fellowship. Mr. Bird won many medals as a long-distance runner and sprinter at Woodrow Wilson High School in Jamaica, Queens, N.Y.

Survivors include his beloved wife, Diana, whom he married on Valentine’s Day 25 years ago, and five children, Linda Yates of Massachusetts, Michael Bird and wife Anette of California, Deborah Bird and Donna Bird, both of Florida and Jeanette Buscemi and husband Paul of Virginia. He was the brother of Daniel Bird of Massachusetts and Leonard Bird of New Jersey and the late Robert Bird of California. Mr. Bird was the grandfather of Gregory and Owen Yates, Patrick Bird, Christian Bird, Jaclyn Jeffrey (William) and the late Timothy Bird. He also has a great-granddaughter, Julia Bird.

The service will take place at 11:30 a.m. Friday, January 12, at Moser Funeral Home in Warrenton. Interment with military honors will follow at Culpeper National Cemetery.
