Reverend Samuel Paul Jones Jr., 83, of Bridgewater, passed away on April 19, 2017, at the Bridgewater Retirement Community.
“Pastor Sam” was born Dec. 22, 1933, in Newport News, to the late Samuel P. Jones. Sr. and Grace Bradshaw Jones.
A graduate of John Marshall High School in Richmond, he continued his education at the University of Richmond, receiving in 1957 a bachelor’s degree in psychology and then in 1961 graduating from the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Ky., with a master of divinity degree. He continued his education in clinical pastoral education through Eastern Mennonite Seminary and Rockingham Memorial Hospital in Harrisonburg.
Rev. Jones was pastor at Poroporone Baptist Church in Shacklefords, 1962-66; Riverdale Baptist Church in Hampton, 1966-71; Harrisonburg Baptist Church, 1971-82, and Warrenton Baptist Church, 1982-1999. He retired from full-time ministry September 1999 and served interim pastorates at First Baptist Church in Winchester, Hull’s Memorial Baptist Church in Fredericksburg and Marshall Baptist Church. After moving to Broadway in 2005, he served as pastor at Stanley Baptist Church from 2006-2015, and as senior adult chaplain at Harrisonburg Baptist Church until April 2016.
In addition to his pastorates, he was a former president of pastors conferences in Peninsula, Augusta and Potomac Baptist Associations; Impact 80’s Committee, Baptist General Association of Virginia; two terms on the Virginia Baptist General Board; Rockingham Memorial Hospital and Fauquier Hospital chaplain’s groups.
In Warrenton, he served on the Founding Board of Fauquier County Temporary Family Shelter and on the Special Education Committee for Fauquier County Public Schools.
In Harrisonburg, he served on the Legal Aid Society Board; as speaker, State Pilot Club Convention; panel member, James Madison University – “Death and dying” and the JMU Organ Guild’s “Music in Worship” panel; Senator Byrd’s Scholarship Selection Committee; Kiwanis Club Board of Directors and youth services coordinator.
Rev. Jones enjoyed sports, fishing in the Chesapeake Bay, movies, church suppers and getting together with family and friends.
Survivors include his wife, Mary Sue Ludington Jones; two children, Jeffrey Alan Jones of Vernon, Vt., and Susan Michelle Payne and husband Todd of Weyers Cave, and his sister, Helen O. Jones of Richmond.
The family will receive friends from 4 to 6 p.m. Tuesday, April 25, at Moser Funeral Home in Warrenton.
A private burial will be at Beahm’s Chapel Cemetery near Luray. A memorial service will be held at noon Saturday, April 29, at Harrisonburg Baptist Church, 501 S. Main St.
